1.
It was always a weekend romance,
I only saw you for a few days.
You had a nice smile;
You'd smile at me constantly,
One side of your mouth higher than the other,
Black eyes sparkling with mischief.
2.
"California", they said.
I just though of you:
Small town boy
Who reminded me of coffee shops,
Libraries and book stores,
Eating lunch on the pier.
Quick to make a joke,
Have a quirky comeback,
But not too loud,
Never too loud.
3.
You liked to hear me talk, I think.
You asked questions
Until you ran out of things to ask about.
You went away knowing more about me
Than I knew about myself.
Even so,
I still knew so little about you;
I never had the chance to ask.
4.
Thrilling, like driving fast
Around mountain curves:
Every breath I took with you
Was an adrenaline rush.
5.
We saw a castle,
You joked about it;
Asked if I had taken enough pictures.
Then you showed me the seals,
The elephant ones,
And said I should come back
When they were mating.
You winked at me as you said it,
Told me I needed to experience love.
I didn't tell you that I already had
When you first held my hand,
The day we had to hop over a fence
To get down to the beach.
6.
My hands shook,
You asked if I was cold,
Asked if I needed a jacket,
Even though the tip of your nose
Was even redder than my own.
I said no,
Laughed, told you to keep it.
"You're the one who needs to stay healthy"
I told you, and you agreed,
But I saw you glance at me, worried,
Every time I shivered.
7.
I didn't see you before I left,
But I wasn't surprised,
You had to work.
I felt bad,
I didn't say goodbye
The last time I saw you.
But it was normal,
I wasn't surprised.
Maybe next time,
You'll come to see me,
And maybe then
We can say goodbye
For the first time.

hey girl, you'll miss me someday
i. you were alpha, i was beta -
omega was somewhere in the west running wild
with the moon;
and you were everything ( i wanted to get rid of ),
darling,
every
thing and all.
( you held me back like i was no wolf
snapping at chains;
i sharpened my teeth for a special occasion )
ii. goodbye never felt as good after jumping off a cliff
and away from you
( i got to scream goodbye
bye,
bye,
and it was like bells of liberty
were ringing )
adiós after four years i coulda spent better
( you're an anchor, darling, i'm the sea;
i'll push and pull until you sink

Thoughts I'll never tell you

it seems nighttime
has never looked this dark
(or maybe my emotions
are just blurring
my perception)
squinty eyes turn
to my alarm clock:
a lighthouse
in the roaring black sea
delirium fades,
as the dream

comes back
How can I miss someone
who wasn't even mine?

i would do anything to get you to love yourself
i know your type, i’ve seen them around here
before, browsing through my poems like
you’re flipping through vinyl records, trying to find
that one disc you were listening to the first time
he leaned over and kissed you.
the only way you’ll ever be able to love yourself
is if he leans over and kisses you again, is if someone
tells you about the seven wonders of your soul, if
someone sits down and writes a list of all your beautiful
fault lines that you’ve never been able to forgive.
you want to love yourself and you want to be loved,
but i know it’s hard to believe that you’re holy,
when your hands still s

So this one is a bit longer, but I wrote it back in January on a plane when I was coming back from California.
