1.
It was always a weekend romance,
I only saw you for a few days.
You had a nice smile;
You'd smile at me constantly,
One side of your mouth higher than the other,
Black eyes sparkling with mischief.

2.
"California", they said.
I just though of you:
Small town boy
Who reminded me of coffee shops,
Libraries and book stores,
Eating lunch on the pier.
Quick to make a joke,
Have a quirky comeback,
But not too loud,
Never too loud.

3.
You liked to hear me talk, I think.
You asked questions
Until you ran out of things to ask about.
You went away knowing more about me
Than I knew about myself.
Even so,
I still knew so little about you;
I never had the chance to ask.

4.
Thrilling, like driving fast
Around mountain curves:
Every breath I took with you
Was an adrenaline rush.

5.
We saw a castle,
You joked about it;
Asked if I had taken enough pictures.
Then you showed me the seals,
The elephant ones,
And said I should come back
When they were mating.
You winked at me as you said it,
Told me I needed to experience love.
I didn't tell you that I already had
When you first held my hand,
The day we had to hop over a fence
To get down to the beach.

6.
My hands shook,
You asked if I was cold,
Asked if I needed a jacket,
Even though the tip of your nose
Was even redder than my own.
I said no,
Laughed, told you to keep it.
"You're the one who needs to stay healthy"
I told you, and you agreed,
But I saw you glance at me, worried,
Every time I shivered.

7.
I didn't see you before I left,
But I wasn't surprised,
You had to work.
I felt bad,
I didn't say goodbye
The last time I saw you.
But it was normal,
I wasn't surprised.
Maybe next time,
You'll come to see me,
And maybe then
We can say goodbye
For the first time.
So this one is a bit longer, but I wrote it back in January on a plane when I was coming back from California.

It is odd how others people can touch us so deeply and then be gone.
Saw it in SheDares' feature.
